EXCLUSIVE: A US political commentator told GB News that the world’s most prestigious university had become ‘unrecognisable’ compared to a generation ago

Harvard University has “willingly surrendered to Marxist-style indoctrination” as the institution suffers from a “takeover by the far-left”, a US political commentator has said.

The prestigious university sparked headlines after some members of its student body signed an open letter blaming Israel for the attacks launched by Hamas on October 7.

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) courses have also sparked controversy as the institution has been accused of becoming mired in wokery.

Speaking to GB News, Margaret Thatcher’s former aide Nile Gardiner said Harvard had become “unrecognisable” compared to a generation ago.

“Harvard is a once great university that is in a steep state of decline,” Gardiner said.

“It has been taken over by the far-left and Harvard is now openly tolerating students supporting terrorism.

“The university is doing immense damage to itself by not acting against what is happening on campus.

“Inevitably large numbers of major donors will walk away from the university and I would not be surprised if Harvard loses scholars as a result of its refusal to deal with support for terrorism and rising antisemitism on campus.”

The open letter, signed by 33 student groups, claimed the events that happened in Israel “did not occur in a vacuum”, and branded Netanyahu’s government as an “apartheid regime”.

Thousands of people have been killed on both sides since the war began.

Gardiner claimed the rise of wokism at Harvard sets an “extremely dangerous” precedent as many people who attend the university go on to become leaders of the United States

“I do think Harvard is a microcosm of many of the growing problems in the US as a result of wokeism and Harvard has willingly surrendered to Marxist-style indoctrination,” he said.

“I think it's time for Harvard donors and many of its graduates to stand up to what is happening.

“For centuries institutions like Harvard and Yale have been the training grounds for future leaders and it is frightening to see the direction Ivy League universities are taking today. They are completely unrecognisable from just a generation ago.

“Some major US employers are fighting back by saying they will refuse to hire anyone involved in pro-terror and antisemitic protests at Harvard and other universities. This is the right approach.

“US corporations should not hire people who support terrorism or hold antisemitic beliefs. There should be a zero-tolerance for this but it's good to see some CEOs fighting back because there has to be a fight back against what is happening here.”

Veteran GOP Media Strategist Adam Goodman said giving children more control and taking control away from parents was a major part in the rise of wokism in all US institutions.

“The American educational system has been under the microscope for the last five years in particular ideologically now it used to be felt and now it's people are talking about it openly that American higher education is moving more and more left, more and more liberal,” Goodman told GB News.

“And that's one thing that could trouble a lot of people.”
